50th Anniversary Celebrations
March 2nd, 2010Preparations for the 50th anniversary of the Church’s consecration in July 1960 are well in hand. As part of the celebrations we are refreshing our Garden of Remembrance and extending our eastern boundary so that we can bury the ashes of any Oakdale resident (not just church members). It reminds us that a Parish Church is there to serve everyone in the community not just those who ‘join the club’.
We are also looking at the interior of the Church recognising that over time ‘detritus’ has built up obscuring some of the startling, awe inspiring beauty of the original design. We are principally looking at the Lady Chapel where the altar, which came from the old Church, is far too big and dominates the space and the chairs are not in keeping with the overall building. The intention is to create a more flexible space, in keeping with the original design but which equips the church for the next fifty years of ministry. The PCC have employed the services of Sophie Hacker a church artist and interior designer and we hope she will visit one Sunday morning to share her ideas more widely with the congregation.
God willing all the work will be completed in time for the anniversary celebrations scheduled for the 15th – 18th July. We begin with a concert by St. Edward’s School on the Thursday evening. Then on Saturday we shall be having our Flower, Craft and Produce show in Church with some fairground attractions in the car park and a photographic display of the history of Oakdale in the Large Hall. The celebrations will culminate on the Sunday with a special service at 10.30am with the Bishop of Ramsbury (acting Diocesan Bishop by then) and the Bishop of Gloucester. During the service one Bishop will re-dedicate the Lady Chapel and the other Bishop the Garden of Remembrance. Afterwards we shall have a parish lunch followed by an early Choral Evensong to round off the weekend. Please put the dates in your diary and come and be part of these celebrations a time to give thanks for fifty years of witness to Oakdale and an opportunity to rededicate ourselves for the next fifty years!
With every blessing,
Antony
