Young People

‘The Way In’ Youth Group

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The Youth group meets Sunday evenings 7.15pm to 8.45pm in our Halls behind the church.

During the winter we tend to play indoor football, hockey, table-tennis, dance mats etc. and in the summer we are often on the field.

We have a quiet space – one of the rooms is set out for a quiet area where you can sit and chat.

We organise a variety other activities, such as pizza bakes, pamper evenings.

We also arrange outings such as Moors Valley Country Park, bowling, ice skating.

We are affiliated to Farside (www.thefarside.info) youth projects and celebrations.

Each session finishes with a ‘reflection quarter’ when we gather together and have a ‘thought for the day’ with time for discussion. We discuss issues that are important to young people, such as Fairtrade Fortnight, bullying etc.

Membership is open to those in year 7 and above though we do take youngsters preparing for Confirmation in the summer term of their year 6.

Walking Strollers

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

St Georges walking strollers are a group of mixed aged people who enjoy walking. The walks are once a month on a Saturday and we particularly like exploring the coast and countryside. We see some wonderful views of Dorset and Poole.  We also enjoy each others company and have a camp once a year in the summer which enables us to have a barbeque after a day of walking and finding a welcoming pub, to quench our thirst.

If you would like to join us on any of our walks please contact: Jonathan Williams (Joe)

Bell Ringers

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Bell Ringing at St Georges

The bells are rung every Sunday morning 9.30-10.00, they are also rung for special services, weddings and occasionally funerals.

We practice on Friday nights between 7.30-9.00pm.

Bell ringing is an art handed down over the centuries providing exercise for the body and mind.

New members are always welcome but we can only teach one or two people at a time because training is on a one to one basis. It takes about 10 lessons to be reasonable proficient handling the bell and a further 10 to integrate with the rest of the band. It takes on average about a year to be a reasonable standard but several years to be a really good ringer. Young people learn much faster than older ones, this applies to any musical instrument. It’s possible to start ringing at about 13 years providing you’re physically strong enough but there is no upper limit. At St George?s we have 6 bells the heaviest being 5cwt or 250 kg which is lightweight compared to most churches.

Since the bells were installed (1989) 2 peals have been rung and lots of quarter peals. A peal is 5040 changes which takes 2 hours 40 minutes to ring and is rung here only to commemorate a special Royal event. Quarter peals take 40 minutes and are rung for lots of reasons, for example, a new Rector and often to celebrate a birthday.

Sunday Club

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The Sunday Club meets most Sundays during the 10:00am service. We come into church for the first hymn and then leave with the children to do activities in the large hall. The activities usually relate to the readings and teachings in the service, and are age appropriate. We rejoin the congregation for the Eucharist part of the service, where the children and leaders either take communion or receive a blessing. At the end of the service the children share what they have learnt with the congregation.
One Sunday per month – at the All Age Worship service – the children remain in church for the whole service. This service is usually less formal than the normal Sunday Eucharist and the children are often involved in its delivery.
If you would like more information about the Sunday Club – please contact the church office.
If you would like to become one of the Sunday Club Leaders – please contact the church office.
Please be aware that a full disclosure Criminal Records Bureau check is required for all Sunday Club Leaders.

Toddlers

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

St. George’s Toddler Group is run by Janine Dupont and meets twice a week in the large hall during term time. Wednesday 12:45pm-2.30pm and Friday 10:00am-11.45am at a cost of £1.50 per family. This includes a drink and biscuit for all. We are open to all under fives and their parents or carers. We also welcome childminders with a concession price of only 50p per extra child. The group is popular and has around 35 families attending on Fridays, the quieter day is still Wednesday with about 16 families. The Toddler Group provides a safe and friendly environment for children and their parents or carers to meet and play. Each session offers free play with many ride-on toys and trikes, pushchairs and prams that can be taken into our 8ft x 8ft playhouse, complete with kitchen, food and picnic table!!

There is an obstacle course with trampoline that separates free play from imaginative play which is set up on our large carpeted area. This includes themes of cars, airport, farm, zoo, dolls house, workbench and freestanding wooden train set!!
If the weather is dry the group can take the opportunity of using the outside play area, which is completely enclosed and covered in safety surfacing. Also, for the very young children there is Baby Corner. This is a duvet with a bouncy seat, play gyms, baby toys and a radiator for warmth.
Each session offers a choice of two craft activities. One is traditionally messy and relates to events in the calendar like mothers/fathers day, Chinese New Year, Bonfire night etc. The other can be mega blocs, stickle bricks, puzzles or books.
For the last 15mins everyone joins in with tidy up time and we finish with our toddler prayer and some nursery rhymes with the use of musical instruments.
